Product Development

Also known as: product-dev, new product development
LeadershipMethodologyDesign

Definition

The whole of bringing a product from a problem worth solving to something people use and keep using — discovery, definition, design, build, release, and the measuring that starts the loop again — as one continuous practice rather than a hand-off between departments

Distinct from project management, which delivers a scope by a date, and from software development, which is one of its stages. The Double Diamond is its shape when drawn; a PRD is its written form at the point where a problem becomes a build; a lab on this site is one product-development loop run small enough to finish. Where it goes wrong is usually the first half — a team that starts in the second diamond has decided the problem by accident.

Leadership

A loop, not a line. The release is the middle of it: what the product teaches once it is in people's hands is the input to the next turn, and a team that treats shipping as the end has stopped developing the product.
