Double Diamond

Also known as: design council double diamond
DesignUXProcess

Definition

The Design Council's picture of a design process as two diamonds: diverge to understand the problem, converge on the right one; then diverge on solutions, converge on the right one

Discover, define, develop, deliver. The value is the two narrow points: a defined problem before any solution, and a chosen solution before any polish. Most process failure is skipping the first diamond — solving well a problem nobody checked.

The Design Council's Double Diamond (2005): diverge to understand the problem, converge on a brief; diverge again on solutions, converge on the one to ship.

The shape is also a warning about time: half of it is spent before anyone draws a screen. A team that starts in the second diamond has decided the problem by accident.
