Definitions

In biopharma, a specific marketed medicine under its trade name — Skyrizi, Rinvoq, Humira — as distinct from its molecule, its indications, and the therapeutic area it sits in

The brand is the unit almost everything organizes around: a brand has its own site, its own agency, its own MLR review, its own ISI, and often its own budget and team. One molecule can carry several indications under one brand, and the same brand site then has to speak to audiences with different diseases — which is why brand sites branch by indication so early in the navigation.

Biopharma

In design, the identity a product presents — the palette, type, voice and motion personality that make two sites built from the same components feel like different companies

The design-system question is where brand is allowed to vary. A system that lets a brand change anything has no system; one that lets it change nothing has no brands. The answer this estate reaches for is a sparse brand definition over shared defaults — see Brand Instance for the resolved-values form of it.

Design System

The name on the box, and the personality on the page — two senses that meet on a pharmaceutical brand site, where the second is regulated because of the first.

Avoid: using brand and product interchangeably in this industry. A product can be marketed under different brand names in different territories, and the site you are being asked to build is scoped to one of them.
