Definition

Mike Cohn's shape for a test suite — many unit tests at the base, fewer integration tests, a handful of end-to-end tests at the point

The argument is cost: tests get slower and more brittle as they climb, so put the weight at the bottom. The testing trophy is the reply.

Mike Cohn's pyramid: the weight sits at the base because tests get slower and more brittle as they climb.

The older of the two shapes, and the one most people mean when they say "we need more unit tests." Right about cost, quieter about confidence: a wide base of unit tests can be green while the product is broken at the seams.
