Definition

The HTML list of name–value groups —
holding pairs of
(the term, or name) and
(the description, or value) — for a glossary, a spec sheet, metadata, a FAQ, or any list where each item is a label and its content; renamed the description list in HTML5 because the pairs need not be definitions

The element for anything that is a table with two columns and no header row: the about page’s three sections are one (
What this is,
the paragraph), a resource’s publisher-date-format block would be one, a component’s props table is arguably one. Several
s may share a
and vice versa; a
may wrap each pair for styling since HTML5. The field-label and eyebrow voices on this site were made for the
. Screen readers announce the pairs, which a two-column grid of
s cannot promise.

Tech

Names and their values, in pairs. When the left column is a label and the right one is what it labels, this is the element, and a table with no header row is the tell that it should have been.
