WAI-ARIA

Acronym

Definition

Accessible Rich Internet Applications, from the W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative — a set of attributes (role, aria-label, aria-expanded, aria-live…) that tell assistive technology what a piece of interface is, what state it is in and what it is called, when the HTML alone cannot

The first rule of ARIA is not to use it: a native <button>, <dialog> or <select> already carries the role, the state and the keyboard behavior, and an attribute only describes — it never adds behavior. ARIA is for what HTML has no element for (a tab list, a tree, a live region) and for wiring a label to the thing it names. Nuxt UI's components are built on Reka UI, which is where most of this site's ARIA comes from.

Tech

A promise to a screen reader, and one the browser will not check. Set role="button" on a <div> and the reader announces a button; press Enter and nothing happens. The role was the easy half.
