Examining source code without running it — for type errors, unreachable branches, style violations, known-unsafe patterns — by tools that read the program as data
Linting and type checking are its two everyday forms. The base of the testing trophy: a class of bugs caught at zero runtime cost, before any test is written.
Everything a machine can tell you about the code from reading it. It cannot say the program is right; it can say a great deal about the ways it is wrong, and it says so on every save.
