Definition

Artificial intelligence: the field of building computer systems that perform tasks associated with human intelligence, such as perceiving, reasoning, learning, using language and acting toward goals

The term was coined by John McCarthy in the 1955 proposal for the 1956 Dartmouth workshop. It has been used for rule-based expert systems, statistical machine learning, and now the large neural models behind chat assistants and coding agents. Current use usually means the last: models trained on vast data, reached through an assistant or an API.
