A11y
Acronymally, accessibility numeronymDefinition
Accessibility, as a numeronym — a, eleven letters, y — the way the word is written in code, commit messages, issue labels and the names of tools (eslint-plugin-vuejs-accessibility is linted under a11y); the same discipline the long word names, abbreviated because it is typed so often
Same family as i18n (internationalization) and l10n (localization): count the letters between the first and last. The short form is for identifiers and labels; in prose this glossary writes accessibility, and the substance — WCAG, semantic HTML, keyboard, contrast, the measured gate — is on that entry. A note for the ear: it is read as the letters, a-eleven-y, and mistaking the ones for an l ("ally") is common enough that the alias catches it.
Not a smaller version of the word. A commit that says a11y promises
the same thing as one that says accessibility, and the linter that runs
under that name checks the real rules; the numeronym is a keyboard
convenience, and the entry it points at is
accessibility.
