figure

,
, figcaption, figure element, captioned imageDefinition
The element for content that is referred to as a unit from the main flow — an image, a diagram, a code listing, a table, a poem — with an optional
that names it, so that the caption is programmatically tied to what it captions and the figure can be moved (to an aside, a page’s end) without losing sense
Every drawn figure on this site — the testing shapes, the Double Diamond, the honeycomb, the loop, the GTD workflow — is a
with the SVG inside and a
under it; the caption is how a sighted reader gets the one-line argument and the SVG’s aria-label is how everyone else does. A figure is not just an image with a caption: a code block with a filename, a table with a title and a blockquote with its source are figures too. The alt on an image inside stays; the caption does not replace it.
A thing the text points at, with its name attached. The caption belongs to the figure the way a title belongs to a table, and the element is what makes that belonging true.
