div

Also known as:
, div element, generic container, divitis
TechHTML

Definition

The generic block-level container with no meaning of its own — a box to put a class, a style or a layout on when no semantic element applies — and therefore the element to reach for last, after
,
,
,
,
,
,
,
,
and the rest have been ruled out

Not wrong, just silent: a
tells assistive technology nothing, which is fine for a grid wrapper and wrong for a navigation. Divitis is the page that is nothing else. Frameworks and utility CSS pull toward it because a <div class=“flex gap-4”> is quick; the rule here is that the layout wrapper may be a div and the thing being laid out should not be. The catch-all page on this site wraps in a
and puts the
inside, which is the right order.

Tech

A box with no name. Use it when the box needs no name, and notice when the thing inside it did.
