Conventional Commits

Also known as: conventional commit, conventionalcommits
TechGit

Definition

A specification for commit messages, type(scope): description, with an optional body and footers, that gives history a shape a machine can read: changelogs, semantic version bumps and release notes derived from the log

feat maps to a minor version and fix to a patch. A ! after the type, or a BREAKING CHANGE: footer, marks a major. Other types (docs, refactor, test, build, ci, chore) come from convention, most often @commitlint/config-conventional. The spec is at 1.0.0; the 1.0.0-beta.3 draft that is still widely linked is close to the release.

Tech

The format every commit in this repository follows, checked by commitlint: the types are listed in CLAUDE.md, and one outside the list is refused at commit time. A spec that makes history parseable pairs naturally with atomic commits, which make each entry in it one change. Reference: conventionalcommits.org, v1.0.0.
