Card Sorting

A research method for information architecture in which participants group labeled cards, each a piece of content or a feature, into categories that make sense to them

Open sorting lets participants name their own groups, which reveals their mental model. Closed sorting has them place cards into fixed categories, which tests a proposed structure. Hybrid does both. Tree testing is the usual follow-up, checking whether people can find things in the resulting hierarchy.
