Bucket

Also known as: object storage, blob storage, s3, s3-compatible
TechInfrastructureStorage

Definition

Object storage’s unit of organization — a flat, named container of objects (files plus metadata) addressed by key, reachable over HTTP, with no directories, no filesystem and no limit that a laptop would recognize; S3 is the API every other vendor speaks, and a bucket is where uploads go once a server has more than one instance

This site’s storage adapter (server/utils/upload.ts) writes to public/img/ in dev and to a bucket in production — S3 or Cloudinary — because a container’s filesystem is gone at the next deploy and is not shared with the next instance. A bucket is also what a CDN sits in front of most naturally, and what Railway now offers beside a volume. The key is the whole path; img/teams/logo.webp is a string, not a folder.

Tech

A filesystem with the pretense removed: no tree, no locks, no partial writes, just a key and the bytes behind it. What it gives up in familiarity it returns in never having to ask which server the file is on.
